Tahir Mahmood. Missing in Action!
PA-6384 Tahir Mahmood was born circa 1942 in Ferozepur. A graduate from Gordon College
Rawalpindi, commissioned in the army 1961, served the 4th and 24th Battalions of the Punjab Regiment. Fought the India-Pakistan
war at the Chamb-Jurian sector in the 1965. Joined the Army Aviation Corps and flew the L-19 Bird Dog with #4 Army Aviation
Squadron.
Also known as TM, he was an outstandingly gallant officer, liked shooting,
hunting, flying, photography, squash, cricket, traveling, and, on top of all these, he took real good care of his family after
the death of his father!
June 27, 1970, Tahir Mahmood was declared missing while doing an aerial search
and recovery mission for a fellow army officer (Captain Bahadur, younger brother of AZK Sherdil) who had drowned near
the "old" Attock bridge, on Grand Trunk Road.
Flying low over the mighty river Indus, near Kalabagh, Tahir Mahmood
was presumably sucked in by the turbulent river currents while trying to locate the drowned officer. An extensive land/air
search by the army aviation and the ground troops was unable to locate the wreckage of the aircraft or the bodies of pilot
Tahir Mahmood and his observer Captain Noor. Both officers were later declared presumed as dead.
